I can understand if you disagree with their lifestyle but other than having your voice heard that you disagree, what is it you hope to accomplish short or long term by passing legislation that makes it illegal?
Any and all responses are welcome…
Ultimately, my opposition to gay marriage may not even have a religious basis. Marriage is a sacred institution for most of us. But not in a religious sense. Marriage is a symbol that represents one of the absolute core values of our culture. It’s power as a symbol is that it is accepted and practiced by almost everyone. Even those with several failed marriages continue to practice it. With all of our incredible diversity (I’m American) marriage has been and continues to be almost universally revered in our society. Redefining marriage amounts to abandoning that core value. Or at least calling it into question. That’s why so many experience such a viceral reaction to gay marriage. On an instinctual level many feel that gay marriage is desecration. And indeed it is. The question to ask is what is this core value, and do we really need it anymore? Whatever one’s view of marriage, it is absolutely one of the most important cultural anchors in our society. It ties us to our past and to one another. This is why its value transcends freedom, or individual rights. Changing the definition of marriage is a radical shift in our foundational thinking. We can certainly discuss/debate the wisdom of making such a change. But having it forced upon us without such a conversation is insane. And that’s just what bothers me. Those who advocate gay marriage are fully aware of what they are doing. They just hope the rest of us don’t catch on until it’s too late. Indeed, it may already be too late. By allowing the debate to be framed in a religious context, we have handcuffed ourselves. It does sound like religious folks are trying to impose their view of morality. But that’s not what is really going on. What is really occurring is a fight over our self-identity as a people. That’s why I speak out against same sex marriage. I’m trying to get folks to see the real issue. Obviously the world won’t end if same-sex marriage becomes the law of the land. But we will have lost something important. I believe it will be one more nail in the coffin of our decadent and dying civil life. It will reinforce the notion that nothing is truly sacred anymore.
I for one am not against it but as I understand it…
According to the Pope marriage is to join a man and a woman to create a family. In his eyes a gay couple can not have a family. It threatens the stability of the children’s future. The church also takes a strong stance against allowing gay couples to adopt. The church and the Pope are not against homosexuality but the act of homosexuality. Even Bush has been quoted saying that he ":prays for the family": with the Pope.
Ultimately the fear is that the child that would be raised by a gay married couple could taint the future of the family.
If you would like to read more on this topic Pope Benedict has been outspoken about this (there are several news articles online) and I suggest reading No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive by Lee Edelman.
The issue is complicated: as there are 2 kinds of marriage:
civil, recognized by the state, &: those recognized religiously.
The state grants a license for people to form households.
They are free to extend that to same-sex couples, if wished.
But that will affect legal status, benefits, inheritance, etc.
Christians have a sacramental view of marriage:
which is only applicable to their church members.
And it is primarily for the nurture &: raising of children:
therefore, by definition, between a man &: woman.
The state recognizes church marriages, but cannot impose
their definition of civil union on Christians.
Who knows what they want… power? It’s likely. Or perhaps they don’t know the whole story. Some people hate to think of giving us our rights because this idea conflicts with their arguments: God says homosexuality is a sin. Gay marriage is a threat to the marriage institution. Legalising this would lead to legalising polygamy, etc. etc. etc.
Maybe they don’t understand that these arguments have little or no reasoning to them. Maybe they just use these arguments because they want to hate us. Maybe it’s against their beliefs. Whatever the reason, the whole issue is kind of stupid. It’s like the whole incident with the lady spilling hot coffee on her lap and then suing because the cup didn’t say ":hot coffee":: people are looking for excuses to shun their responsibilities. In the case of gay marriage vs. the non-profit organizations and theist groups, the responsibility is that of shouldering the miniature ":burden": of tolerance. To some people, it’s almost like the very idea of tolerance is an unforgivable sin in itself.
As for disproving the foolish arguments, just read the article, and perhaps we can teach people how pointless it is to hate the LGBT community:
What will you do if Sharia law is instituted in the United States? Having all those ":civil unions": listed would be a big help to the morality police…
I am a very devout christian but I do not judge anyone because it is wrong. However, homosexuality is a major sin against God and against nature. Marriage on the other hand is a sacrament between a man and a woman, so that they can have children together. Therefore gay should not be allowed to marry, they cannot even produce children together. It is Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve or Ana and Eve.
I guess once a person has been, by God, given over to a reprobate mind, it really don’t matter :
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves : Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections : for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature : And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another : men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a REPROBATE mind, to do those things which are not convenient : Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, malignity : whisperers, backbiters, HATERS OF GOD, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant breakers, WITHOUT NATURAL AFFECTION, implacable, unmerciful : WHO KNOW THE JUDGEMENT OF GOD, THAT THEY WHICH COMMIT SUCH THINGS ARE WORTHY OF DEATH, NOT ONLY DO THE SAME, BUT HAVE PLEASURE IN THEM THAT TO THEM.
Romans 1: 22-32
I really don’t know what they think they will accomplish. I recently saw on the news (don’t remember which channel) that divorce rates have actually gone down in countries that allow gay marriages.
The eventual reversal of the first amendment of the constitution of the United States, and the establishment of a government backed theocracy.
You know, going down the other side of the slippery slope.
because if that happened then cats and dogs will start getting along and then Hemp will be legal and world starvation will end and no more oil will be needed and the world will be full of happy smiling people . and that will lead to no more wars for a thousand years and then Jesus will return . and we will go to the battle field and battle for the right to rule heaven and then the winners will go to heaven and the losers will go to hell and who wants that . after all the longer we are here the more they can breed and keep the wars going over religion and it will be like jesus never came in the first place .
