raw diet, prey model. the diet mother nature created for them, not stupid idiotic in-it-strictly-for-profit dog food companies.
congrats on your pup, even though it should not have left its mom until 8 weeks or longer. Once you do pick a good puppy food like the ones below. I found out that putting the food in a blender with water and in your case get a milk supplement to mix with it, blend it up a little to make a gruel. It makes it easier for the puppy to chew the hard food. Also if the food is already in smaller pieces you can just add the water and milk supplement in the dogs bowl. this will help your puppy as it will make the food softer =]
I’m not familiar with puppy foods anymore, but I have heard that too much protein is guite dangerous for a puppy/young dog. Unfortunately I don’t remember why.
Because of allergy and immune disorder issues in one of my pits I have needed to seek out better dog foods. Iams, Science Diet, Eukanuba, etc. are not really that great. Try to find a store in your area that caters to dogs with health issues. That’s where you will find the really good pure brands. I use California Natural and Premium Edge. I’m guessing they also have puppy formulas.
Even if you don’t plan to use a holistic vet, it may be worth your while to make one appt and just pick his/her brain about nutrition. They are experts at weeding out the garbage products.
I recommend training your puppy to walk on a (people)treadmill. Lure him with treats just at the very beginning. I got a great used one on Craigs list for $150. It will help condtion your dog and when he is grown and jogging on it, he can work off that excessive energy plus it takes mental focus, especially if you vary the speed. Always make him exit through the front. If jumping off the side is left as an option he can really hurt himself. We play and he gets a treat after the treadmill. That keeps him interested. My dog probably has about 2% bodyfat. Everyone comments on how healthy he looks.
Sorry I got a little off subject! Good luck! Enjoy your pit. They are the greatest!
I feed both of my dogs diamond you cant even get it at wal-mart and stuff you have to get it from either the vet or a specialty pet store. its for working and large breed active dogs and they have a puppy version my puppy loves it. its also cheaper than the other brands too as well as better for them. i paid about $30 for a 40 lb bag of food. or any food that has chicken or some kinda meat as the first ingredient. just look at the back of the bag on ingredients and the items listed first are what it has most of. Iams is good food so is purina
His mother’s milk till he is 8 weeks old. Also a good quality puppy moist food.
