Whats the best way to comfort a dog during a thunderstorm?

🙁 :{ :[ =&amp:lt: my por Roxy is so scared. A huge thunderstorming is going on right now and my chihuahua Roxy is so scared. She is shaking, her ears are straight back, and her tail is stiff. I feel so bad for her. Whats the best way to comfort her?

Have you ever read the book Marley and Me? Its a true story about a Labrador Retriever. He had a huge fear of thunderstorms. They took him to the vet, and they gave them some doggy pills to give him (if i remember right), about 30 minutes before a thunderstorm, and it calmed him down a lot.

Oh and WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT TRY AND COMFORT HER.She will just think she’s doing what you want her to do by freaking out.

My dog is the same way with thunder, gunshots and fireworks. You do not want to tell her it is OK or hold and cuddle her. The best thing to do is act normal and let the dog hide in a safe spot. My dog shakes and drools throughout a thunderstorm. She has a place she hides where she feels more secure. I try to turn the TV a little louder, but that has minimal help. I did get a Thundershirt for my dog (this may be the dog wrap mentioned previously). It has helped some, but isn’t a miracle. It only seems to work if I can get it on her before a storm starts. Once she hears thunder, forget it. When the shirt works, she still runs to her safe spot, but will lay down and go to sleep. She also comes out within a half hour of the storm stopping versus two hours or more later without it. You can also check with your vet for medications, but you would have to give these before storms happen so they can be in the bloodstream. Good luck. I know this is hard.

Show your dog lots of love and affection during a storm. Pet and cuddle with your dog to help alleviate his fears. He’ll feel safe and protected with you near.

Turn on some music. Choose a selection that is soothing. A nice relaxing tune can help to calm your dog’s frazzled nerves.

Play with your dog to keep him calm. Get out the doggie toys and have a play session. Play time can keep your pet distracted until the storm passes.

Create a safe haven for your pet. If your dog takes off to a certain spot in the house every time it storms make it a comfortable place for him. Place his favorite blanket and toy in the spot and let him stay there until he feels like coming out. It will be his comfort zone when he’s feeling anxious.

Give your dog cover. Some dogs have been known to hide under the bed covers during a thunderstorm. If your dog feels safe under the covers give him his own blanket to weather the storm. You can place it on his own bed, in his special hiding place or just cover him up wherever he happens to be. Giving your dog his own security blanket will help to calm his fears.

Hope this helps,

if you comfort her, she will think the behavior is the right thing to do. You want her not to be so scared right?

You can hold her, but she will still be scared, just let her do whatever…

Some dogs are better off not messed with, they could scratch you really badly if they get too scared!!

You can hold her and I’ve heard if you play music or the TV to drown out the noise of the thunder will work.or perhaps play with her with her toys if she does that. You need to distract her from the thunder sounds.

all you can do is cuddle her to let her know its all going to be ok
poor roxy =(

This may sound mean, but don’t comfort her.
If you praise her, stroke her or give her treats, she’ll think her behaviour is good, so if she acts scared more often, she’ll get praise!
Ignore her.
Don’t worry about it. =]

Call him over to yu and give him treats and give him hugs

cuddle with her on the couch while watching tv

hold her or pet her, that’s what I do with my chihuahua and yorkie.
